Infections in Newborns
Newborn babies have an increased risk of infections and their serious complications—which include brain damage or even death. Now, an investigator funded by the Children’s Discovery Institute is studying how newborns’ immune response may differ from that of adults.
Deborah Lenschow, MD, PhD will examine a specific virus—the Chikungunya virus—that in a recent Asian outbreak proved more severe in newborns than in adults.
The goal of this research project is to characterize differences in the responses of infants and adults to viral infection, using Chikungunya virus as a model. Dr. Lenschow hopes that, ultimately, her studies may suggest new ways to protect the health of newborns.
