The Children’s Discovery Institute supports broad, interdisciplinary research initiatives within four specific centers:
- McDonnell Pediatric Cancer Center focuses on the etiology and treatment of pediatric brain cancer with special emphasis on genetic and genomic approaches to discovery.
- Center for Musculoskeletal Diseases focuses on the genetic basis of musculoskeletal birth defects, childhood arthritis and related diseases.
- Center for Pediatric Pulmonary Disease focuses on the cell biology of the pulmonary epithelium and genetic mechanisms in asthma and cystic fibrosis.
- Congenital Heart Disease Center focuses on the environmental and genetic etiology of congenital heart disease and the development of novel diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.
All funding initiatives are organized through these four centers and submitted proposals must be immediately relevant to the research programs outlined above. The funding mechanisms are:
1. The recruitment of new faculty whose research emphasis is central to one of these initiatives. Up to $400,000 of support (inclusive of indirect costs) is available for salary and research start-up costs. Proposals may be initiated by any Washington University faculty member.
2. New interdisciplinary research initiatives focused within one of these Centers. Up to $150,000/yr (inclusive of indirect costs) for up to three years is available for salary support, equipment and other research costs. Proposals may be initiated by any Washington University faculty member.
3. Pre and postdoctoral trainees whose research is integral to one of the initiatives. Up to $30,000/yr (inclusive of indirect costs) for up to two years is available for salary support.
4. Unique educational programs integral to one of these initiatives. Up to $10,000 (inclusive of indirect costs) is available for support. Proposals may be initiated by any Washington University faculty member.
Letters of Intent must include precise specific aims and clearly indicate the broad, high-risk nature of the science. Interdisciplinary team-based research initiatives may be initiated by any Washington University faculty. A preliminary budget must be included within the 3-page limit, need not be itemized but must account for indirect costs. In addition to these 3 pages, proposals must include NIH format biosketch of the principal investigators and a one-page letter from the sponsoring Department Head. Pre and postdoctoral trainee applications must also include a one page letter from the proposed mentor.
Although all faculty are encouraged to apply, preference will be given to faculty members prior to achieving tenure. Application status may be followed on-line.Following internal review, selected investigators will be invited to submit a complete proposal by October 15, 2007. All investigators receiving CDI funding will be expected to participate fully in the on-going activities of the specific Center relevant to their proposed work.
